Christmas comes to Bexleyheath!

Hundreds turned out to see the lighting of Bexleyheath’s Christmas Tree on Saturday 19th November. Throughout the day crowds were treated to performances from swing singer Shane Hampsheir, Centre Stage Theatre Academy, and The Rock Choir. Ice King and Queen stilt walkers and street performers entertained the busy high street with dancing elves and traditional toy soldiers as well meeting the excited children.

A singing parade led by Centre Stage Theatre Academy through the Broadway Shopping Centre led shoppers towards the main event ready for the countdown. The official switch-on was done by the Worshipful Mayor of Bexley Cllr Eileen Pallen with help from pupils of Gravel Hill Primary School, who were winners of the town’s Christmas card design competition.

Local business owner Peter Marshall said “It has been a fantastic day all round for Bexleyheath. We have seen some great entertainment many of whom are local singers and performers who have brought enthusiastic support. The town has been buzzing all day with a festive feeling and I hope everyone knows how hard the local businesses have worked to make today happen and everyone will show support for their community by shopping locally this year.”

Tony Garratt, Bexleyheath Town Centre Manager said “The support we have seen today for the Switch On event has been incredible. We have been so proud to host such a magical day and welcome so many people to enjoy what Bexleyheath has to offer. Everyone has been wowed by the new Christmas lights, staging, and grotto this year and I am very positive for the festive events we still have to come in the next few weeks.”

The town centre will now be host to a Christmas Market of festive goods including sweets, hot desserts, and German bratwurst sausages, every day up until Christmas. Throughout December there are more festive events including School Christmas Carolthon, Santa’s Grotto, and a free gift wrapping service at weekends.
