Bexleyheath join forces with Royal British Legion for Poppy Appeal 2016
On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October Bexleyheath Town Centre hosted the 2016 Poppy Appeal launch event in partnership with The Royal British Legion.
There was a service at Christ Church, Bexleyheath to open the Garden of Remembrance which was attended by the Deputy Mayor and other Dignitaries.
Army, Air and Police Cadets were on hand to talk through their active roles and the works they are currently undertaking whilst actively fundraising for The Royal British Legion. There was also a Scammel Recovery Vehicle present and The Great War Trench Experience vehicle to explore. There was also a performance by the Rock Choir.
Over £10,300 was collected over the two-day event for the Royal British Legion who provide lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans, and their families.
Ken Sprowes, Treasurer and Membership Secretary of The Royal British Legion said :
“With over £10,300 collected, this is a fantastic amount for The Royal British Legion. The success was helped enormously by the support of the Bexleyheath Business Improvement District but also by the Army, Air and Police Cadets who turned out on both days and helped with the collecting. There were numerous other volunteers hard at work as well and we are very grateful for their time and their efforts and of course the public’s generosity.”
Tony Garratt the Town Centre Manager said ” The weekend’s activities have been a great success and it has been a great honour for the town to host such an important event. All the volunteers have worked very hard to achieve such a huge amount in fundraising and thanks to the Rock Choir as well who came and entertained. The Great War Trench Experience proved popular with all ages and was most appropriate in the centenary year of the Somme.”
The Royal British Legion will be continuing the collecting now at our static points in Bexleyheath including the Broadway Shopping Centre, Bexleyheath ASDA, Welling Morrisons and Welling Tesco.
On Remembrance Sunday there will be a service held at Bexleyheath War Memorial led by Rev Trevor Wyatt from Christ Church.
