Christmas comes to Bexleyheath!

Thousands turned out to enjoy Bexleyheath’s Christmas Switch On event on Saturday 18th November.

Throughout the day crowds were treated to performances from Tom Johnston who was featured on BBC’s The Voice, Centre Stage Theatre Academy, and The Rock Choir. Ice Queen stilt walkers and street performers entertained the busy high street with festive characters meeting the excited children. A festive funfair for the younger children was enjoyed alongside Christmas Stalls selling gifts, sweets and wintry treats.

The Worshipful Mayor of Bexley Cllr Peter Reader did the official switch on with help from 3 local school children who were winners of the town’s Christmas card design competition.

Speaking about the event the Mayor of Bexley said “I would like to thank the generosity of the businesses who funded not only the entertainment but also the beautiful decorations down the length of the Broadway together with the tree; they would also like to thank the public who turned out in vast numbers on a wet and chilly Saturday to support the annual switch on and arrival of Father Christmas. They enjoyed being able to speak with some of the shoppers and hope that everyone enjoyed themselves.”

Amy Lau whose eight-year-old son was one of the winners said “A Thank you for all that took part in the making the event a success. My children have said they loved everything about the day from riding the train with Santa, the entertainers & getting to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Bexley. Especially getting to see Santa in his grotto with their special tickets.”

Tony Garratt, Bexleyheath Town Centre Manager said “The support we have seen today in Bexleyheath for the Switch On event has been incredible. We have been so proud to host such a magical day and welcome so many people to enjoy what Bexleyheath has to offer. I am very positive for the festive events we still have to come in the next few weeks.”

The Christmas Grotto inside the Broadway Shopping Centre also opened on Saturday, and will remain open until Christmas Eve, raising money for The Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice. Children who visit the Grotto will be transformed into Father Christmas’s Reindeers for added festive fun!

The town centre will now be host to a Christmas Market of festive goods including sweets, hot desserts, and German bratwurst sausages, from December 12th until Christmas Eve. Throughout December there are more festive events including School Christmas Carolthon, Lantern Parade and Santa’s Grotto.
