About Bexleyheath BID
In July 2011, major rate paying organisations in Bexleyheath town centre voted in favour of creating a Business Improvement District (BID) and paying an annual contribution to help fund additional projects, services and events that would improve the local environment for the benefit of businesses, employees and visitors alike.
Bexleyheath BID covers virtually the entire town centre and represents approximately 230 levy payers including well-known brands and organisations in the retail, leisure, hospitality and public sectors. We are an independent, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. All the projects and services we deliver are additional to – not in place of – those already provided by the London Borough of Bexley.
Bexleyheath has a lot to be proud of and the town has strengths and opportunities that it can capitalise on…
- One of Greater London’s leading town centres.
- A growing, diverse population.
- Increasing footfall with varied expectations and requirements for social, recreational and commercial services.
- A rich and interesting social, architectural and commercial heritage.
- A good retail mix and investor confidence, for example, Travelodge’s decision to build a hotel.
- The Mayor of London’s decision to invest £3.2m in transport and public realm improvements.
Shops and shopping centres are the lifeblood of our town centres, indeed in some ways shopping has become another leisure, rather than simply a retail activity. However, we know that though Bexleyheath has met the challenge of a downturn in the economy better than many other towns around the country, shopping habits are changing with a huge increase in people buying online. Despite that growth, the majority of people will still want to buy from shops, but town centres and the retailers in them will have to make it a pleasurable experience by providing an attractive, clean and green shopping environment with superb levels of customer service.
Since 2011, we have successfully delivered a range of initiatives that reflect the needs of our levy payers. In June, businesses will be invited to decide whether they wish to continue making a positive contribution to the commercial and social welfare of the town centre through the work of Bexleyheath BID. We are proud of our achievements so far and hope that in the future we will be working towards making Bexleyheath a better place to do business, visit, live and work.
